Walnut is popularly eaten as a snack in Africa. It is very delicious and a nutritious food.  Advantages of walnut are amazing.  The botanical name of walnut is plukenetiaconophora or tetracarpidiumconophorum. Walnut is very important for medicinal, therapeutic and pharmaceutical reasons. It is called ukpa in Igbo, okwe in Delta, asala or awusa in Yoruba, Arinsa in Benue and iringoro in Hausa.

However, the pleasure of eating this snack is the cracking of the black shell either with your teeth or biting down or hitting lightly on a hard surface to reveal the creamy nut. One feels the cool crunch while eating this snack and it always leaves a slight bitterness on your palate thereafter.

In addition, walnuts are usually hawked on the streets and in markets by women and children. It is often tied in the little cones of transparent cellophane and hawks around.

According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, women who consumed 28 grams of walnuts twice a week were 24% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Experts believe that the advantages would be similar for men too.

The snack contains amino acid arginine which offers multiple vascular advantages to people with heart disease or at the risk for heart disease. Walnut supports healthful cholesterol and raise blood levels of heart-healthy ALA.

3) High in vitamins:

An analysis of the nut found that it contains ascorbic acid, tocopherol, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folic acid, vitamin E, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, and B12. This makes it a healthy food for pregnant women.

4) Boost fertility:

Walnut is a potent sperm booster. It helps to tackle infertility among men. Eating more walnut especially among men helps to improve their chance of sperm health, sperm development and spermatozoa count. According to experts, eating about 2.5 ounces of walnuts daily improves semen quality in healthy young men. This is because of the high healthy fatty acids in the nut.

5) Excellent source of minerals:

One of the advantages of walnut is a healthy source of minerals. Walnut contains minerals such as manganese, copper, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium. For example, copper helps in skin regeneration and shinning of skins while potassium helps to maintain heart function.  Zinc helps in the body growth and development; gonadal development, digestion, and nucleic acid synthesis.

6) Anti-dementia:

Eating walnut daily helps to fight dementia. Vitamin E and flavonoids in walnuts help to destroy harmful free radical chemicals that cause dementia.
